Forum: GratefulDead Subject: Question For GD '69 Lovers

say hypothetically one was to be on a desert island with only 1969 GD recordings, and had the following shows:

01/24 to 01/26
02/15
02/21 & 02/22
02/27 to 03/02
03/28
04/05 & 04/06
04/25 & 04/26
04/27
05/23 & 05/24
10/25
11/02
11/07
12/28

is there some important/necessary '69 performance that this person, on a desert island, would be lacking?

an often overlooked show that belongs in the island shoebox...strange but cool China Cat segue into SOTOTW

http://archive.org/details/gd69-06-05.sbd.cotsman.15204.sbeok.shnf

Morning Dew, Me & My Uncle, Doin' That Rag, He Was A Friend Of Mine, Hard To Handle, Cosmic Charlie, Cryptical Envelopement-> Drums-> The Other One-> Cryptical Envelopement China Cat Sunflower-> Sitting On Top Of The World-> Dark Star -> St Stephen -> The Eleven -> Lovelight

An interesting show. I heard this tape in 1971 in Brooklyn at one of the Hell's Honkies apartments (don't remember whose). I thought, "What a unique progression--C.Cat into SOTTW." Of course they wouldn't let me have a copy. For no particular reason. Classic assholes.

You might enjoy this show.It features a really good Dupree's and a smokin' SOTW.The highlight is my favorite 60's Dark Star and Janis is on the Lovelight if you like that kind of thing.Strat was on the money with that China Cat->SOTW rec.

i am actually a fan of Pigpen, but i am not a fan of Janis (i don't dislike her by the way, and her performance of, i forget the title of the song, the song she did on the Festival Express video of the train ride thru Canada is stunningly good, even amazing), but however, i'll note your suggestion and give it a good listen tonite or tomorrow!

I'm not a Janis either, but I thought I would mention it just in case.If memory serves it was an unexceptional Lovelight.

Since strat and I bracketed the 6/6 show you might want to give it a listen as Elvin Bishop leads the band in Jerry's absence for the first 5 songs. The boys absolutely tear up the Smokestack Lightning.

Janis did two Lovelights with the band, didn't she? And I think that was it.

12/29/68?

Har, har; hmmm, no, that would be fine by me (your list)...I tried to think of a show with a song segue or some such that is missing, and the only thing I can think of is 11/08/69 rather than just Nov 7th, or 02/11-12/69 for the amazing Elevens, but these would be quibbles?

thanks WT, rest assured 12/29/68 is buried on the next island over, easily reachable by raft ... thanks for the tip on 11/08, that definitely needs to be included!

fyi ... i am right now big time into '69 GD, like i have a sickness or something...

I think it was more than 6 yrs ago we chatted about how much we both loved the MoftheM-->DS transitions; I always think of you when listening to those, and they are just fantastic...I was quite pleased to hear DS Orchestra do the transition v nicely when I saw them last month; it made me realize that MoftheM is a tough song to sing, ya know?

Jerry did it fantastically, and those that question my take on his vocal decline just have to listen carefully to how well he handled these sorts of efforts in 69 and 70 to realize how far his voice COULD fall, IMHO.

ah, yes, i did see that, thank though for pointing it out! i thought about those Ark shows, but for some reason they never really did anything for me; i also loathe Boston, and that may perhaps be playing a part in my thinking ... however, i might change my mind on those Ark shows!

The Fillmore West shows are so darn good that it makes the Ark shows sound average! I think this was the best show of the run, but I dont know how much of an upgrade it is.

hmm, i'll give that show a listen then (and that's exactly my thought, they sound 'average' in comparison), and for the record, i don't actually 'loathe' boston, i live near that city in fact, and all my family lives there, it's just that...

Well I'm a Jersey guy so it's ok to loathe Boston sports teams. Especially as the Knicks are kicking the Celtic's buts and I would love to see the Rangers do the same to the Bruins.

I'm sure RBNW will chime in on that...

Thanks for posting this Arb, and all those who posted links - best day at work for quite a while.

And to return to a theme from a while back, I really enjoy 'Sittin' on top of the World.' Not to disrespect the Cream rendition, which I enjoy equally, but I still find the way the Dead sing it to chime better with the lyrics.

At the risk of sharing too much (which has never stopped anyone else here), the Dark Star from 2/22 is a fantastic tune to listen to on an iPod while having a colonoscopy done.

Before she dosed me, the nurse anesthetist asked me what I was listening to and when I told her Grateful Dead, Dream Bowl, 1969, she smiled and said the Dark Star was a great tune. She asked me how far under I wanted to go and I told her, just far enough that I can't feel or care about the camera snaking through my innards, but I can still hear the tune. She assured me I was in good hands and I was indeed well taken care of.

Not sure I will be able to listen to this show the same way again. Although i do wonder if the images projected from your innards were that different than those goofy psychedelic lights from that era. All they would have to do is move the scope in and out a bit to get the full effect, no? Far out! Au contraire, Far in.
